'No evidence of violence' in Irish woman's death in New York, say police

Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra moved to the US in 2018.

Police investigating the death of fashion designer Martha Nolan O'Slattara aboard a yacht in New York have said an autopsy conducted on the Carlow native's body "did not show evidence of violence".

The statement from the Suffolk County Police Department went on to say the "final cause of death is pending further examination."

The 33-year-old, who was living in Manhattan for the past seven years, was on board the boat Ripple which docked at the Montauk Yacht Club in East Hampton on Long Island on Monday night when the alarm was raised.

Ms Nolan O'Slattara's partner contacted the emergency services, while good samaritans attempted CPR without success, but she was declared dead on the boat by first responders.

In a statement on Wednesday, police in the US said an autopsy had been conducted on the fashion entrepreneur's body which showed no evidence of violence and her final cause of death "is pending further examination".

An earlier statement from Suffolk County Police Department had said detectives are investigating.

It said: “East Hampton Town Police responded to a 911 call from a man reporting a woman unconscious on a boat docked at the Montauk Yacht Club, on Star Island Road, at approximately 12am.

“Good samaritans attempted to perform CPR on the woman.

“Martha Nolan-O’Slatarra, 33, of Manhattan, was pronounced dead on the boat by first responders.

“The preliminary investigation and exam were inconclusive regarding the cause of death, which will be determined by an autopsy conducted by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.”

Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra moved to the United States in 2018 at the age of 26. She had been living in Manhattan.

While in the US, she set up fashion brand East X East in the Hamptons in 2021.

At the same time, she founded the Amazon brand Duper.

Last year, she was appointed Director of Operations at the investment firm K4 Capital.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that the loss of Ms Nolan O'Slattara was "an absolutely devastating blow to the family".

"A young, beautiful, very talented, creative woman. Our thoughts and our prayers are with the family, and I can't comment any further than that, other than to say it is a devastating loss for the family and for the community in Carlow."

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

A spokesperson for the Department noted: "As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases."
