It’s been a frightening fortnight for our elderly folk since the airing of Inside Ireland’s Nursing Homes by RTÉ Investigates, which discovered a litany of disturbing practices and dire conditions at two specific nursing homes – The Residence in Portlaoise and Beneavin Manor in north Dublin.

As the architect Frank Lloyd Wright once said: “The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes.” I didn’t feel that sentiment in the horrors I watched that evening on RTÉ, mixed with a sense of déjà vu.
