Joanna Fortune: My children refuse to help look after our new puppy

This new puppy is a new baby of sorts in your family, and like any new baby, it is taking up a lot of your time, attention, and energy
Joanna Fortune: My children refuse to help look after our new puppy

Joanna Fortune: "Taking a dog into your family means integrating the dog into the family unit. But this requires advanced planning and getting your home and your family members ready for the new arrival."

We recently got a puppy, and of course, I've stepped into 'mummy mode', feeding, cleaning up, and fretting about his health. My oldest daughter, who is seven years old, is quite put out, saying I love the dog more than her.

I've tried to explain that it's a busy settling-in period, but it hasn't made a difference. My other two children are indifferent and don't want to play with the dog. I thought I was getting a new pet to bring the family together. I didn't expect this to happen.
