MY SISTER rang me just as Nell McCafferty’s death was being announced last week.

I was sitting on the couch with my daughter, cuddling our new addition to the family — a dog called Nero. In the background, an RTÉ radio presenter was mourning and honouring feminist writer and campaigner McCafferty, but I’d stopped listening because I knew from my sister’s voice that she was upset.
